Protest Mark Belling this Friday

NMC , 03.11.2004 21:00

Not satisfied with his normal absurd behavior and support for state fascism, Mark Belling of WISN (a clear channel station) called Latinos "wetbacks" a few days ago. The Latino community has called for a protest this Friday in response.

The question is: where are the WISN station offices? According to the Journal Sentinal article, printed below in full, the protest starts at 3 o clock this Friday. But where?

Latino activists to protest outside WISN studios over Belling slur

Activists from the Latino community are planning a Friday afternoon demonstration outside the WISN-AM (1130) studios to protest talk show host Mark Belling's use of an offensive term for illegal Mexican immigrants.

Robert Miranda, the editor of the Milwaukee Spanish Journal and one of the organizers of the planned 3 p.m. protest - coinciding with the start of Belling's show - led a panel of activists in a Tuesday morning news conference critical of Belling and WISN, one of six Milwaukee radio stations owned by Clear Channel Communications.

Last week, Belling described illegal immigrants as "wetbacks" while talking about voter fraud.

While Belling did say, "I deeply and profoundly apologize," on the air Monday, he also made light of the matter, taking an on-air poll of listeners, who disagreed with the apology. He later joked about his audience as being "all wet."

On Tuesday's show, Belling joked again about the issue.

"I think we'll set up a deal every day where I apologize to someone," he told listeners.

Belling's comments on Monday prompted an angry response from Miranda.

"I believe that he sees this as nothing more than a joke," Miranda said Tuesday at the news conference at the offices of the Federation for Civic Action, 1220 W. Windlake Ave.

"A joke at our expense," added Oscar Cervera, director of the Federation of Civic Action and executive director of Mexican Fiesta Internacional.

"Mark Belling and WISN seek to suppress the voice and interests of our community," said another participant, Matt D. Nelson, executive director of Education for the People.

"It goes to show you the ignorance of the man," said Julia Gonzalez of Voz Latina, a Spanish-language Milwaukee newspaper. "Our community will not stand for it."

WISN program director Jerry Bott said Monday that the station stood by Belling's apology.

"I have no further comment at this time," Bott said Tuesday.

Miranda said members of his group would seek a meeting with WISN management to discuss the issue. Planning for that and other possible actions - including focusing the protest on WISN advertisers - would wait until after Tuesday's election, Miranda said.

Hit them where it hurts
05.11.2004 - 05:16
Go after their advertisers. Threaten boycotts. I think thats alot more effective than a protest which might just be seen as free publicity.

The campaign to target Sinclair's advertisers seems to have had at least some effect.

good point, but

Hey there.
I agree with most of your point to the letter.
But I kinda wish you'd have put it to us all
with something like the following:

"Equally as effective"

instead of:

"more effective"

It's high time Mark Belling is called on the carpet for his malicious behaviors and choice of words. He is nothing more than a big headed BIGOT. I would love to see him fired and deemed non-hirable in the future. Frankly, I can't imagine how he was ever able to hold a job for any length of time. What makes him think he is any better than any one else?

Mr Perfect Isn't
07.11.2004 - 18:56
Mark Belling continually took verbal shots at the 20 year from Mequon who was suffocated by Mequon police while in their custody and never had an open mind as to what had really taken place on that day. He formed and shared his narrow minded opinions and made public his racist attitude because of the three african americans also involved. Mr. Perfect he is not. Belling should be terminated immediately

Get your information correct
08.11.2004 - 12:41
Well it is amazing how many people have commented on this topic, yet I bet not one of you have ever listened to the program.

I heard the program in question. He did NOT call ALL latinos wetbacks...but that seems to have slipped here. He was referring to the illegal immigrants that may be trying to vote or take advantage of our system.

Right after he said it, he did appologize. After that, yes he was making fun of the situation.

The protesters were asking for a heart felt appology. They got that over the weekend. NOW they changed their minds and want him fired. Lets get our act together folks!

Is Belling contraversial? DAMN RIGHT HE IS. But that makes for interesting radio. It brings out people from both sides to talk about it. He also works at trying to hold elected offials feet to the fire. Which I think is a good thing.

So lets get our information correct. For example...the protesters protested in front of WISN..._TV_. They didnt even know where Belling works! They also thought it was WITI channel 12. Not even close. Also, when protesting, make sure you spell your words correctly. Some of the signs from the Channel 12 protest were mis-spelled.

I really feel sorry for those of you just looking for ANYTHING to protest. Life must really suck! .... for you at least.

A Lefty Double Standard.... But, What's New?
09.11.2004 - 07:36
On Friday, November 5, 2004, while I was listened to black-owned, black-run Milwaukee radio station WMCS AM 1290, morning host Keith Murphy was discussing the recent presidential election. Not surprising to anyone who listens to him regularly, he was noticeably bothered by the re-election of President Bush. At approximately 9:20am, he said, "We just don't know what kind of animal are we going to see [in the White House] these next four years…?”

Now, whereas I have seen article after article about Mark Belling and his "wetback" comment, I have heard not a peep about referring to someone or a group of our leaders as an "ANIMAL"! Why is this? The answer, of course, is because those in the White House are thought of as an aggregate white, Republican male; thus, it is deemed acceptable... seeing as that group is demonized as evil. This is done by people who are jealous of the successes of white men... plain and simple.

Also, whenever there is a strike, the union members scream the term "Scab! Scab!" at those coming to fill the undone jobs. If you think about it, a "scab" is pretty much a discardable, dry piece of skin. Is that something that any person would want to be referenced as? Hardly. But that is not even questioned. Partly because those in the union have been known to seek brutal retribution from those who challenge them.

But back again to Mark Belling, for those who have ears to hear, Mark Belling's reference was to those MEXICAN CITIZENS who ILLEGALLY sneak across the border of OUR ("OUR" includes Mexican-Americans)COUNTRY, and who ILLEGALLY vote. What, pray tell, are these people supposed to be referred to as, "amigos bueno" or something?!

It is the very same people who talk about vote suppression against blacks, and other such drummed up conspiracies, who are in essence putting their stamp of approval on ILLEGAL activity because it benefits the Party - Democrats - that they are for. Same ol' double-standard, folks.

I don't get it
09.11.2004 - 10:13
So let me get this straight. Belling made a comment about illegal immigrants stealing a vote in an American election, and people are upset about it. By people protesting him, aren't they demonstrating that they think it OK for illegal immigrants to vote in our American election? ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS. Like, they shouldn't be here to begin with. Webster defines "wetbacks" in relation to ILLEGAL immigrants; nowhere did Webster mention the Latino community on Milwaukee's south side.

Belling Witch Hunt
09.11.2004 - 10:50
Mark Belling is being treated unfairly and outrageously. Where is my newly elected Congresswoman Gwen Moore apologizing for raising an idiot son? Where is the hispanic community denouncing illigal aliens voting?
You people who are protesting are a bunch of hippocrates. You are the same morons with the BUSHit bumper stickers. You are a bunch of whiney sore losers.

Mark Belling speaks with the ring of truth and that is why he is dangerous to you. He points out daily the vile way people on the left like to lie and cheat their way in life. Can't win an election fairly? Steal it. Fill out false voting registration. Fill out false absentee ballets. Steal yard signs. Slash tires. Vandelize Republican headquarters.

Congrats to you! You've succeeded in preventing freedom of speech yet again.

What's Going On?
09.11.2004 - 10:59
I was brought up to believe it was never, ever acceptable to call anyone names. Calling names based on ethnicity is deemed a racial slur, isn't it? Racial slur designate a people based on their race, right? You can not racially slur half of the people of a particular race, and exclude the other half! Whenever anyone uses a racial slur, it's based on a particular race of people, not the 'legal' or 'illegal' members of that race, not the 'lighter' or the 'darker' the 'gainfully' employed or the 'unemployed' or even the 'fatter' or 'slimmer'

Saying this, I wonder...what does anyone else think about the other comments here where the writers are loudly and sometimes obnoxiously trying to make their point that not 'all' Hispanics were called wetbacks by this bigot...just the 'illegal ones'?

Wetbacks go back
09.11.2004 - 15:19
Hey, I'm glad all of you commie liberals can site here and cry racism when you pieces of crap are promoting racism constantly.
If you're an ILLEGAL mexican/latino immigrant, YOU'RE A WETBACK.
Get a life you worthless worthless people. Get the hell out of this country.
If you're born in america or go through the system to LEGALLY become an american, you're not latino, you're not an "african-american", you're not german. You're an AMERICAN you worthless racists.
