On 20th Anniversary of Bhopal Tragedy,
Dow and Indian Government Still Refuse to Take Responsibility
Bhopal survivors hold candle light vigil at Gandhi’s statue
WHAT: Candle light vigil in memory of the 20,000 who died in the Bhopal Gas tragedy and support for those affected by the still-contaminated site.
WHO: Two Bhopal survivors, supporters of International Campaign for Justice in Bhopal (ICJB) , Education for the People! and the Association for India’s Development (AID) Milwaukee
WHEN: Thursday, December 2, 6:00 pm.
WHERE: Statue of Mahatma Gandhi, India-America Friendship Park, 901 N. 9th Street, Milwaukee
WHY: The Bhopal Gas tragedy is known as the ‘Hiroshima of the chemical industry.’ Twenty years later, the victims have not been properly compensated and the site still remains grossly contaminated. Union Carbide, the responsible party, was purchased by Dow Chemical in 2001 but both companies refuse to clean up the site. On July 18, 2003, Wisconsin Rep. Tammy Baldwin joined 17 Members of Congress demanding that Dow address its inherited liabilities calling Dow’s evasion of the matter, “…a blatant disregard for the law.” (copies available)
WE WILL BE READING A STATEMENT FROM REP BALDWIN AT THE VIGIL (Copies of the statement will be available at the event).

The chemical used by Union Carbide was methyl isocyanide. UC actually "invented" it--the results of thier preliminary tests were so horrendous that they refused to disclose the findings to the American government or public.
Of course, Indian lives are worth far less, so tragedies like this are acceptable. Warren Anderson is still fishing somewhere, unpunished for the most horrendous industrial accident in history.
Once again we should consider what would happen if 20,000 American lives were lost. The US refuses to extradite many international criminals...would any country deny the US some corporate CEO responsible for the deaths of American lives...?
