Denver Post has been banned from Fort Carson in Colorado Springs
Colorado because of a story they wrote which was critical of how
"medical hold" soldiers are treated.
"They are singling us out simply because they didn't like our story,"
said Post Editor Greg Moore. "Other newspapers and media organizations
have reported on the issue. Our story was thorough, and balanced the
concerns of soldiers with substantial response from the military,
including from some officers who acknowledged problems with the program.
"It looked like they were picking on them and I don't think that was the case,
said the head of the 'colorado press association' who KRDO tv chose to
keep unnamed. "But I think they can talk to the editor, to the publisher
if they have to get things straightened out."
The Denver Post stands by its story and says if Fort Carson doesn't drop
the ban they'll appeal to senior military officers or congress and it may
consider legal action as well.
I'm following this story because I was placed on medical hold too when I
was at Fort Carson during Desert Storm awaiting my medical discharge.
I found out from Congressman Sam Gedjenson's military liason Frank Rowe
that the reason they kept me on hold for three extra months was that if
they sent me home without a new recruit replacing me from basic training
then Congress would be alerted to the fact that we were NOT properly
defenting the Untied States to have so many young men and women overseas
in harms way.
Fort Carson was also where I learned the 2/3 - 3/2 rule regarding
wholesale lying about friendly and foe deaths, injuries and property
damage.
