South Shore Frolics Parade Infiltrated by anti-cop brutality activists
coalition of parade invadin' kids, 17.07.2006 23:08
A small group of anti-police brutality activists managed to infiltrate the South Shore Frolics parade in Bay View, on July 14th. The parade, whose purpose has not exactly been determined, produced the standard celebratory fare: police, fire-fighters, et cetera. Bay View residents were clearly surprised by the cadre of kids with an un-traditional message.
End Police Brutality Now!
We swear, there was an actual parade.
A few blocks back, anyway. Did they get lost?
Or maybe all these people just came to see us...
See, all the attention cheers us up.

Accordingly, views from the community were mixed. The majority of the crowd just stared without comment. A fair amount of support came from the communites one would expect, and was accompanied by a substantial amount of detraction. Among the more amusing comments from the crowd were, "no more girl pants!," and "what police brutality?" (the latter comment is only funny because it is insane). Of course, the ubiquitous statements "get a job hippie" and "if you don't cause trouble, you won't be beaten" were uttered as well. In general, however, there was a substantial positive response.

cadre

I really wouldn't consider 4 kids a cadre, it also might help if you took more time in planning your actions, if you saw yourselves walking down the street as you were that day, would you take the message serious? no one is going to get the message when you're walking down the street with a barely legible spray painted bed sheet.

Rather than knocking them for what you perceive to be an ineffective action, YOU should plan one, do it, document it, and share it with us.
As someone not involved with this action, had I been there, I would have taken it quite seriously. Imagine your random parade-going person. She got there real early for her front row seat and is sitting in her lawn chair waiting for the parade to start. But before the parade arrives, a message carried by four kids presents itself. Rather than being a part of a massive spectacle, it's out in front of the parade, by itself. It is the first thing that person sees.
And illegible? Give me a break. If you have trouble reading that.. well I don't know.. you're silly.

An arguement could be made that making the banners the way there were made makes them stand out more because they weren't streamlined and fancy.

Poorly Planned
19.07.2006 - 15:52
I agree this was horribly planned...
You Forgot Candy to Throw Out at the Kids!!!!!!
Even better! You should throw out cards about what to do if you witness police brutality!
Well... Hindsight is 20/20

I don't see how not passing out candy makes the action, which was designed to be quick and easy, "poorly planned." I don' know if kids would have payed more attention if there would have been candy. Either way, it elicited quite a response, so people were clearly paying attention to it.
Flyers with information about what to do in case of police violence would have been a good idea. We did pass out flyers, however.

No one was saying it was well planned or that was even anyone's intention. But they did something, you did nothing but sit and watch. Thanks for being in passive acceptance of police brutality and systematic racism, you fuck tard do nothing idiot.

Clever idea & some suggestions
13.09.2006 - 14:46
I am an admirer of infiltration as a tactic and I think it's one of the few good "weapons" the Left in the USA has right now. (The Yes Men is a good example of this.) This parade infiltration was a clever idea and I commend those who participated. It's easier to criticize from a computer than to actually stand up in front of a potentially hostile audience. However, may I add a few suggestions on how this kind of action could be done better? (If ever done again). Dress just like the other parade go-ers. Blend in. Hell, maybe even register as part of the parade (fake name of course). Carry a double-sided banner and as the parade begins, initially display the goody-two-shoes mainstream message, then flip it to display the protest message when the parade is in full swing. Then fellow marchers could pass out cards the other person on this board suggested about what to do in case of police brutality. You'd probably get kicked out of the parade, but that'd be so bitchin'.

I'm a big fan of revolution by pranksterism. If you can make your revolution fun, it'll be a lot easier to get people to join you.
