digg this post The Grand Old Party--the Republican party--is extending an open invitation to bloggers to report first-hand on their National Convention in September. Their website says that at the 2004 convention in New York City, they experimented with new media techniques and had good experiences. You need to fill out a form to request a press pass, so not everyone is guaranteed a pass but I'm giving it a shot anyway. This year they're hoping to have much more blog coverage.
From GOPconvention.com: In 2008, we will have a considerable blogger presence in Minneapolis-Saint Paul during our convention. The Committee on Arrangements is also developing an aggressive plan that utilizes emerging technologies to involve bloggers who are unable to travel to Minneapolis-Saint Paul.
Perhaps the GOP is taking a hint from the 400,000 protesters who marched against the Republican convention in 2004 in New York City. The demonstrators used blogs, instant messages, email lists, podcasts, indymedia, txtmobs, and cell phones to help coordinate their actions and get vital media coverage. This year, tech-savvy activists are targeting the RNC in St. Paul. They're already planning to employ some hi-tech toys to stay in touch during protests and publish photographs, video, and reports posted on the internet in real-time. Four years have passed since the 2004 conventions, so organizers are likely to start using the technologies that have recently emerged. I'm sure that digg, reddit, youtube, twitter, gcast, facebook, myspace, flickr and the all the other new social media websites/applications will play a big role at the protests in September.
Back to the press pass... We here at CrashTheConventions would love the opportunity to report on the spectacle from right inside the belly of the beast. So I'm putting in an application as we speak! We'll post the response.
